Sometimes you just get lucky. On this day Trudy and I had dropped off our daughter for another year of college and we had decided to enjoy the beautiful day with a walk around Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg. I had brought along a camera and lens, not looking for anything in particular, but ready for any opportunities that may come along. It was a moment we used to talk about our plans for the coming months .

Due to all the years working in higher education, September still feels more like “new years” than January 1. Since leaving the world of college teaching and administration, there is no longer the intense season of 70 hour weeks that dawns in September, but the patterns still shift and change.

Psychologically, my brain moves from summer mode into fall mode. The world around me starts changing colours, evening get cooler, evenings around the firepit are welcomed, and fall creative projects get kicked off. September is a wonderful time. It also critical to take advantage of the random opportunities that present itself, because winter is coming.

This photo has the richness of the golden sunlight reflecting off the brick pathway leading your eye into the image framed by the door in the gate. The contrast between the blue of the gate and the signage with the gold of the path and the sun should make every Winnipeg resident a bit nostalgic for their CFL team.
