Still Water
The still water perfectly reflects all that is above. The naked trees standing on the lightly snow-covered island feature prominently in the image. The pre-dawn sky shows how the darkness is being chased across the blue horizon. Even a few wisps of clouds can be seen in the reflection.
The still water also hides so much more. The ice hasn’t completely closed this area off yet because there is a current quietly moving the water through the scene. It hides the otter who only minutes before the photo came to see who was standing on the shore. The water beneath the surface is cold. Cold enough to be dangerous to anyone to staying in for too long.
Much is hidden by the still water.
But to see all of the other stuff would distract from the beauty of the photo. We want the glassy reflection to draw our attention away from the bizarre, messy, dangerous, and somewhat chaotic life happening below.
We spend most of our time keeping the waters of our lives as still as possible so that only the beauty above the surface is reflected to our families, friends, and coworkers. Consider yourself grateful if you have someone in your life that knows you below the reflection and still loves you. This photo is for them.
