Behind the Door
On our trip from Guatemala City to Antigua, our driver, Byron, said something that stuck with me. He said, “You know how you say in English, don’t judge a book by its cover? In Guatemala it is, don’t judge a place by its door.”
While interpretation of both phrases can definitely be applied literally, they both are understood figuratively. So often we judge people by our embedded perceptions of reality, making snap judgements by the colour of their skin, the language they speak, a hard-to-understand accent, or even the clothes that they wear.
A whole world opens up when we crack the door open, go inside, and listen to the experiences of those living on the inside.
